Kyoto Metalwork - Phoenix Menuki
This pair of Hozon certified phoenix menuki is a nice example of Kyoto metalwork from the Edo period, crafted from shakudō (a traditional copper-gold alloy) with colored accents (iroe) and carved in relief (katachi-bori).
In Japanese culture, the phoenix (鳳凰, Hō'ō) symbolizes rebirth, prosperity, and peace. Derived from ancient Chinese mythology, the phoenix represents a harmonious balance of yin and yang, appearing only in times of great peace and prosperity. It is a revered emblem associated with imperial authority and auspicious fortune. The phoenix motif often appears on traditional Japanese swords, armor, and furnishings as a symbol of renewal and eternal life.
In samurai culture, the phoenix also represents the resilience and enduring spirit of a warrior. Just as the mythical bird rises from its ashes, a true samurai embodies perseverance and unwavering dedication.
These menuki would make an excellent addition to a high-quality koshirae (sword mounting) project, enhancing the aesthetics and symbolic meaning of any katana or wakizashi.
they can also be appreciated as standalone art pieces, perfect for display or collection.
